Redirecting Behavior

Two Perspectives of Behavior

First Perspective

Fixed Redirection of Behavior →  Naughty, uncooperative, difficult, defiant, rude, disrespectful, etc.

  • Action → Attempt to control the behavior through exclusion or external motivators such as bribes, reward charts, threats, intimidation, punishment, shame.
    • Result → Extrinsic motivation and short-term change.
      • Action to continued behaviors → Different attempts to control the behavior. Greater exclusion, different bribes, different rewards, greater threats, continued punishment, etc.
        • Result → Extrinsic motivation and short-term change
          • And so on and so on…

Second Perspective

Growth Redirection of Behavior → Communication, skill-based deficits, mental health, regulation.

Success! You're on the list.
